Overview

In this workshop you will create a Popplet account and explore ways you might use Popplet or a similar application in the classroom as a collaborative learning tool. We will explore how concept mapping can be used for group problem solving and how this might look in a classroom environment. Finally, you will design a student-driven activity for students to gain experience and an understanding of using concept maps to solve problems collaboratively.

Activity #1

Step 1: Begin exploring Popplet by creating an account and browsing other
public showcased Popplets.

Step 2: Create your first Popplet. Title the Popplet About Me and populate it with
information about you and your personal interests. If you need some guidance as
you create your popplet, click on the ? icon at the top right of the Popplet webpage
and animated directions will walk you through creating your first Popplet. See the example below.

Step 3: After creating your Popplet, make it public and share the link on the
Discussion tab at the top of this page, under Popplets. If you are using Google+ or another social networking platform, you can also share it on your profile by posting a new status update.

Step 4: After you post your Popplet, view the Popplets of fellow workshop participants and/or others to learn more about them. To make this a collaborative activity, click on the button in Popplet next to Share (shows double person icon) to add users and comment on their Popplets. For example, if a person likes hiking you could add a popple of your favorite hike with a picture or map.

Reflect and Share

After completing Activity #1, post a reflection on the Discussion tab at the top of this
page, under Reflections - Activity #1. Include your thoughts and ideas for using Popplet
with students for group problem solving.

If you are using Google+, you can also share your thoughts on your profile by posting a
new status update.

Activity #2

Step 1: Using this Google Presentation, plan a student-driven activity to help students
use Popplet for a collaborative activity. Think about the following.
  • What is the content area?
  • How will students use Popplet for the activity?
  • How will they use Popplet for collaboration?
  • What is the content and goal of the overall lesson or activity?
  • Where will the Popplet they create will be used?

Step 2: Brainstorm ideas for the Google Presentation with other workshop participants
by posting your thoughts and ideas on the Discussion tab at the top of this page, under
Activity #2 Brainstorming. Gain new ideas and discuss possibilities by commenting on the
posts of others.

Step 3: Once you have an activity planned, please add your ideas to the Google
Presentation by selecting one of the slides with a blank template. This slide presentation
is a collaborative document so everyone in the workshop will be adding their ideas and
information. Only edit the slide that you have selected for your ideas, unless of course
you are co-publishing with a peer or a peer asks you to proofread and edit their slide
(We encourage all of the above in the spirit of collaboration).

Reflect and Share

After completing Activity #2, post a reflection on the Discussion tab at the top of this
page, under Reflections - Activity #2. Reflect on your experience with this activity and the
ideas presented and/or discussed by the group.

After you post your reflection, read and comment on the posts of two other participants in
the workshop.

If you are using Google+, you can also share your thoughts on your profile by posting a
new status update.
